Royal Excitement

There was plenty of excitement at The K for this past homestand!  Actually the Royals excitement is not confined to just the stadium.  It’s everywhere.  Last week on my drive to the stadium, I was reminded of the glory days of high school sports.  My friends and I always had pre-game rituals and superstitions that involved listening to certain music, eating certain food, etc.

As I was making the journey from Odessa to the stadium, there were people all along the way that seemed to be my own personal “warm-up music.”  Sometimes I will forget when I have our uniform on, but it never takes long for me to be reminded, as cars and trucks were honking and giving waves of approval along I-70.  When I stopped for gas across the street from the stadium, people were cheering and hollering!  One guy even came over to my pump to give me a high five!  This kind of energy and excitement around the Royals makes the best job in the world EVEN BETTER!  I was so excited to finally get to the stadium and let the fun begin!

During our pre-game meeting, we receive our promotions and jobs for that particular evening.  One of the many awesome attributes of this job is that we do different promotions and events every night.  We’re constantly learning new ways to make our aspect of the game more polished and better for the fans.  On this particular night, I was most excited to see that my pre-game responsibility was live shots with Tim Scott.  This is a new addition to K Crew’s responsibility, and one that I could not be more excited about!!!!  A few games prior had been my first time on microphone in a live interview with Tim Scott.  He asked Amy and I some questions about the selection of fans for our promotions.  It was a blast!  However, this night was a little different because Tim informed me that he and Tetiana would be going over to Sheridan’s for their shot.  At first, I was disappointed thinking this meant maybe I wasn’t doing a live shot after all…until Tim informed me I’d be doing a live interview BY MYSELF!
My major in college was Communications with an emphasis in Public Speaking, and on my Facebook profile, “handheld microphones” is at the top of my list of interests.  Needless to say, I was SUPER excited for this opportunity.  I was on the Bud Light Party Deck and interviewed Netflix employees that were here from all over the country.  We didn’t have a whole lot of prep time, so I was a little bit nervous until I heard Mike McCartney’s voice asking, “Erica- where are you?”  Something about his voice just made me smile and realize the sheer cool factor of what I was getting to do…this calmed any anxious nerves I had and allowed me to really enjoy the time to talk to such excited fans.  It was an absolute blast.

I’ll let these fun snapshots tell the rest of the story from Homestand #3…

Here are some high school baseball players that were really excited about being on CrownVision for the Commerce Bank Pinball Shuffle.  Congrats on winning, Ryan, and good luck with the rest of your season!IMG_6058.JPG

I was walking around just talking to fans, and this guy stopped me and said, “I’ve got to have a high five from a K Crew girl!”  You know you have a cool job when part of your job description involves giving high fives to excited fans!IMG_6063.JPG

These fun little guys were very proud of their Royals tattoos!  And look at those muscles!IMG_6061.JPG

Wednesday night, some of my high school students took advantage of the INK College Night ticket promotion, which offers $7 tickets with a high school or college ID.  Looking good, Grain Valley FCA!

On Sunday, I was with my boyfriend’s family for a Mother’s Day lunch.  His family is super nice, but more importanly they’re all really big Royals fans!!  It was so fun getting to talk to them about K Crew and about the Royals in general!  One of his cousins, Nick, mentioned seeing my picture on screen during K Crew’s T-Shirt Launch, and another one of his cousins said he saw me on the dugout during the Hot Dog Launch and was screaming at me for a hot dog!  (I’ll be sure to get you one next time, Josh!)  And oh yes, after lunch we were all watching the game of course!  I told Ryan as we left that I definitely approve of a family full of Royals fans.

It’s a GREAT day to be a Royals fan…

K Crew Off-season Update

I’ve been meaning to get a new blog up, but between winning volleyball games (yeah GVHS Lady Eagles!!!), grading papers, and doing my own homework, I’ve been a little busy!  As I was driving home from class this evening, Garth Brooks’ “Friends In Low Places” came on the radio and, of course, MADE ME MISS K CREW SO MUCH!!!  It also served as a reminder to get all of you caught up on some off-season K Crew action…

A few of us lucky K Crew members were in a little different setting a couple of weeks ago.  Instead of being outside and on dugouts, ocho de octubre 019.jpgwe were courtside and running to halfcourt at the NBA exhibition game at Sprint Center.  Amy, Emily, Jacqueline, and I were very excited to be part of the game crew for the Portland Trail Blazers vs. Atlanta Hawks game.  Here are some pictures of our night…

Jacq was in charge for the night and did a great job!  Here’s a little glimpse of the pre-game “action”…

Being a basketball coach’s daughter, I was raised on the hardwood floor and have played basketball since before I could walk, so it was pretty cool to get to be ON THE COURT with some professional basketball players and work in a setting with my other favorite sport.  Not only was the experience pretty neat, but it was also really great to see my old K Crew friends again!  It was one sweet night at Sprint Center!

A week later, K Crew had our end of season party, which I was VERY sad to miss because I couldn’t miss my grad school class!   And then here’s a picture I found from the last game that I had meant to include in the last blog but hadn’t loaded on my computer yet.  I felt like it was still pertinent to post this picture though, because at the party, Tony Awards were presented and I received “Biggest Flirt,” which just would not have been possible without the good-looking charm and encouragement from these two guys… hahahaha, miss you boys!

October yeah yeah 003.jpg

PA122556.JPGThe K Crew has also been involved in a few charity events since the season ended.  A couple weeks ago Jacq, Amy and Aaron helped out at the Whitetail Pumpkin Farm Hayride for Special Needs Children, and Sean, Shaun, Sarah and Kirby attended the First Downs for Down Syndrome Buddy Walk at Arrowhead Stadium last weekend.  It’s great to get out into the community and work with other organizations!

Just a heads up, my next blog will include information on 2009 K Crew Auditions, so be sure to check in next week for that exciting info!

My Top Ten List

Because of my new busy schedule with school, volleyball and grad school, I haven’t been able to work as many games as I would like lately.  However, I was finally able to get on the schedule for this past Wednesday night.  I was so excited at the thought of being back at the stadium, catching up with my long lost K Crew friends, and just enjoying the fans and everything about being at the game.  After school, I changed into my powder blue uniform so I would be ready to go right after volleyball practice.  All of my players enjoyed the Royals spirit and a couple of them even inquired about how to get on the K Crew.  Needless to say, I was SO excited about the game…and then I got a phone call from Emily as I was almost to the stadium to find out it was cancelled!!  I feel like most people get excited when they find out they don’t have to go in to work…but I was genuinely SAD!

I had planned on writing this blog about my first game back, but instead, I compiled a Top Ten list all about the amazing qualities of being K Crew member!!

Drumroll please…

Top Ten Reasons it’s a GREAT day to be a KCrew Member:

  1. We get to be at the stadium all the time.  I seriously just love being there so much!!
  2. All kinds of cool uniforms.
  3. We get paid to do things we’d do for free, i.e. cheer on the Royals, run in hot dog suits, etc…
  4. We get to meet all kinds of amazing exciting people, which this season has included David Cook, Emerson Drive and, of course, your Kansas City Royals!
  5. We get to hang out with Tim Scott.
  6. Tim Scott.jpgWe get to be on CrownVision, the world’s largest high definition video board! And occasionally on FSN!
  7. We get to launch t-shirts and hot dogs from the dugout!  There’s just something really exciting about hopping up onto those dugouts between innings!
  8. Tickets to the games.  (This should actually be on a separate list entitled, “Top Ten Reasons It’s GREAT to be friends/family with a K Crew Member.”)
  9. The opportunity to work with such exciting, talented people!  (I started to give a shout out here to some of my favorite people on K Crew but the list was basically THE ENTIRE GROUP!!! I LOVE MY FELLOW K CREW MEMBERS!!!)
  10. Just the feeling of being a part of such an exciting organization as the ROYALS!!!  There’s just a certain excitement and pride that comes with saying, “Yeah, I work for the Royals.”

Now after making this list, I’m really missing the best job ever, so there better be no rain in the forecast for Saturday or Sunday, because rain or shine, I’m going to The K!!!

It’s a GREAT day to be a Royals fan…
